Ruth Chalk Textile Art and Design

On this page you can see some of my older work. I used to have a market stall selling 2nd hand Indian clothes and saris, and their colours and designs directly influenced many of my first textile pieces.

I learned the satin-stitch and machine embroidery techniques that I use by embroidering on old tee shirts. I initially used stars a lot in the designs because they are all straight lines and therefore much easier to sew! Later I took inspiration from bacteria, viruses and cells.
